Garrett’s Multi-Dimensional Multi-Frequency (MD-MF) Technology provides deeper and more accurate target analysis and identification. Targets are detected and analyzed using multiple frequencies simultaneously, as well as utilizing multiple dimensions of conductivity and ferrous (iron) content.
As your skills increase, you can purchase software upgrades to convert your VX5 to either a VX7 or VX9 model. Each Vortex upgrade includes additional operating frequencies, more advanced features, and more power.

Frequency Choices: Choose from 13 kHz single-frequency operation or MD-MF simultaneous multi-frequency operation for effective detection of all metal types.
Hi-Resolution Ground Balance: Features 175 points of ground balance resolution for terrains ranging from ferrous ground to saltwater beaches.
3-Tone Audible Target ID: Provides three distinct audio tones for greater target identification.
Hi-Resolution Discrimination: Remove certain ranges of metallic targets from audible detection. Includes full range of iron (ferrous) target discrimination and the ability to “notch out” (remove from audible detection) other ranges of non-ferrous targets.
Rechargeable battery: The built-in lithium-ion battery provides approximately 15 hours of use, enough to get you through a full day of searching on one charge.
Iron Audio: Allows users to hear discriminated iron and avoid digging undesired flat iron targets such as bottle caps.
Searchcoil: The Vortex VX-5 comes with an 8.5” x 11” DD Raider™ searchcoil, designed for maximum depth and sensitivity. A searchcoil cover is included to protect your coil.
Detection Modes: Includes four detection modes, plus Pinpoint: Zero Discrimination, Standard Mode (ideal for most coin, jewelry, and relic hunters), US Coins Mode (includes discrimination pattern ideal for U.S. coins), and Custom Mode.
MD-MF Target ID scale: On the VX5, metallic targets are identified on a single 0 to 99 Target ID scale based on the metal’s conductivity and ferrous properties.
