The first of the Oyashio-class submarines of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force was commissioned in 1998. As of 2006, a total of 9 ships of the Oyashio class have entered the service of the Self-Defense Forces, and 2 or 2 ships are under construction or are being planned. The 10th ship will enter service in 2007. The Oyashio-class 268-foot hull can carry 20 torpedoes or UGM-84C anti-ship missiles. Unlike previous generations of Japanese submarines, the Oyashio class has bow torpedo tubes and hull-protected sonar arrays.
