The Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered attack submarine is an attack submarine that can perform missions such as raid, anti-submarine, intelligence collection, search and rescue. The United States has a total of 51 Los Angeles-class submarines, of which 16 are deployed in the Pacific Fleet and 32 in the Atlantic Fleet. The first boat entered service in 1976. Nine submarines of this class participated in the 1991 Gulf War, two of which fired cruise missiles at their targets. Between March and April 2003, 12 submarines of this class reinforced Operation Iraqi Freedom, and all of them fired cruise missiles at their targets.
