Overview The most famous of clipper ships, CUTTY SARK, is today preserved for posterity in a drydock in Greenwich. She was built to freight tea from China and was constructed by Hercules Linton for the purpose of beating Termopylae, who was considered the fastest ship of her day. Both ships had mainly the same principal dimensions: Length: 64.7m; Beam: 11m; Depth 6.4m. CUTTY SARK had a net tonnage of 921 tons compared to Termoplylae at 948 tons.
Due to many centuries of ship building it was difficult to find good oak in England, and it ws also noticed that the oak frames took up too much space in the preciaous cargo hold. Therefore, composite building came into being with wooden panelled iron frames. CUTTY SARK was built on a keel of elm and planking of teak. From mizzen mast to stern, CUTTY SARK has raised halfdeck, and forward an anchor deck. The deck house astern of the foremast holds galley and forecastle. The deck house astern of the main mast holds cabins for non- commissioned officers and cadets. Depressed in the half deck is the cabin with Captain and First Officer's staterooms. The ship only carries skysail on the main mast, and only the topsails are divided. Cap and other rigging details are made of iron.
